1. antique (n.) 古董
他的字根是 anti/ ante ，表示「之前」的意思。與它相連的字都跟「先出現」有關。例如： antebellum (adj.) 戰前的、antenatal (adj.) 出生前的、antecedent (n.) 祖先 / 先行詞等等。
例句：Jack is in trouble. He just broke grandpa’s favourite antique. 傑克有麻煩了。他剛打破阿公最愛的古董。
2. ancestor (n.) 祖先
這個字是由 an/ante 前+ cest/cess 走+ or 的人合成，字面上就是走在前面的人。而跟 cess 有關的字也十分常見，如 process (n.) 過程、access (n.) 獲取、recession (n.) 衰退等等。
例句： There were portraits of his ancestors on the walls of the room.
房間的牆上有他的祖先的照片。
3. anthropology (n.) 人類學
這個字是 anthrop人＋logy 學說所組成。Anthrop 的相關字有 philanthropist (n.) 慈善家、misanthropist (n.) 離群索居者。順便一提，意思跟外型有點像的另一個字 archaeology 是考古學，它的字根是arch大的、早期的，略有不同。
例句：Anthropology is the study of the human race, its culture and society, and its physical development.
人類學是一種研究人類及其文化、社會、和發展環境的學科。
4. civilisation (n.) 文明
這字是 civil 民間＋lise 動詞化＋tion 名詞化所構成，civil 的變化是 civic，通常也跟公民的有關，如 civilian (n.) 老百姓、incivility (n.) 無禮、uncivilised (adj.) 未開化的、civil engineering (n.) 土木工程等等。
例句：Some people think that nuclear war would mean the end of civilisation.
有些人認為核子戰爭將代表文明的毀滅。
5. primitive (adj.) 原始的
這個字根是 prim(e)主要、原始的意思，也是很日常的重要字根，常見的有primary (adj.) 主要 / 初階的、prime (n.) 全盛時期、primer (n.) 導火線等等。
例句：The spiny anteater is a mammal, although a very primitive one.
針鼴算是一種哺乳類，雖然是很原始的品種。
