Beware! The Traffic Knights are coming.
Safety is like a lock, but you are the key.

On a bright, sunny day, as I stood in the middle of the road, a group of young, noisy, guys and girls, driving a grandiose convertible Porsche, sprinted towards me. As the red light blinked, the guy who was driving passionately, wishing to cross the signal to save his valuable time, reluctantly stopped just an inch away in utter disappointment. One of the girls was texting in delightment while her bosom friends giggled in excitement. As my solemn eyes met the driver’s eyes, there was a sudden change in his appearance from a reckless young adult to a humble man nodding in acknowledgement. Here I was, standing just in front of their vehicle, holding the ends of a square-shaped, light yellow poster which read “Thank you for stopping at the red signal”, in bold red letters.
The youngsters smiled at me and greeted in affirmation. Their eyes assured that they understood what I was trying to convey and they appreciated my small effort. The girl, who was texting, stopped and remarked, “You are doing great job pal”. I felt extremely happy and satisfied by their encouraging words. I sensed that this tiny little gesture was inspiring my generation. I showed my gratitude to these people who were complete aliens to me and wished them luck. I sighed in contentment as they drove away smilingly.

This was the first time, I was participating in a road safety awareness campaign organised by VFC and once again it turned out to be hell of an experience. The event is called TraffiKnights where in, VFC volunteers stand at a signal showing thank you notes and cautionary messages to drivers, pedestrians, cyclists and everyone else who chooses to be on the roads. Volunteers, who are not comfortable revealing their identity can wear a mask while participating in the cause.
TraffiKnights is one of our fourteen causes, which aims to educate people about the importance of following traffic rules in order to avoid road accidents. We want everyone to realize that their every little step on road could potentially affect the safety of fellow motorists and passengers and hence they should be cognizant of it. When you decide to ride on the roads, it is not just your duty to be mutually agreeable with other drivers but it’s your responsibility to remain safe and keep others unharmed.

Your ignorance can risk someone’s life and leave their family in life long trauma. Do not ever be the reason for a child’s grievance. Do not be the reason for a father’s helplessness. Do not be the reason for a mother’s sorrow. It is brutal and inhumane. Instead, be the reason for someone’s happiness. I hadn’t realised this simple cause will give me such immense pleasure. I went to participate in the cause with little hesitation. But, the experience has deeply overwhelmed me and grounded me forever so much so that I have decided to participate in all the upcoming TraffiKnights events.
Would you not like to spread such a beautiful message and show people that you care? Come and join us at VFC and help us make this planet a better place.
