Review: Seeing the youthful book cover photograph of author Kendrick Oliver (born 1971), I must admire even more so his thorough, original, though slightly deficient, analysis of religion and spirituality of NASA, the astronauts themselves, and citizens at large during the cultural Space Age years. He has the perspective of a historian discovering archived materials and regarding evidence without prejudice, although his distance in time and also his British background does prove a disadvantage. I, on the other hand, was a participatory witness, growing up on TV’s Tom Corbett, Space Cadet (1950–1955), a subscriber to the earliest NASA public documents, a Star Trek Trekker from the start, and of particular relevance to the topic, associated with astronaut Edgar Mitchell’s Institute of Noetic Sciences. Thus, I keenly read Oliver’s book and aver its high merit with minor caveats.
Most of us are familiar with readings from the Bible by astronauts while in space looking down to Earth. Moreover, many recall the release of the photograph of the entire Earth seen from a distance in the blackness of space and how it influenced poets and aware people of fragile “Spaceship Earth” at a time when global environmental concerns were drawing attention. We learn that they were not taken by artistic astronauts or after being emotionally moved by the view but instead were asked by NASA ahead of time as being useful. The book goes well beyond this overt information, discussing the very religious and mythical meanings of venturing beyond the planet and how their experience in space affected some astronauts’ religious and spiritual beliefs. When space adventures were novel, when people watched on live TV every rocket launch and stayed glued to the tube during the moon landing mission, the cultural ramifications were often discussed by pundits and priests. As today space exploration is routine and nearly bores the populous, this book takes on added importance in reminding us of how things once were.
Oliver sets the stage by telling us about the 1950s, when the Cold War was also a religious war against Godless Communism (and also secular humanist ‘fellow travelers’), such that “under God’ was inserted into the Pledge of Allegiance and “In God We Trust” became the federal motto. NASA’s chief centers were located in the Southern Bible belt of Alabama, Texas, and Florida. Thus, it was no surprise that communal prayer at a given hour was advocated by Congressional resolution for the safe return of the Apollo 13 mission. Vice President Spiro Agnew considered gaining public support for extended NASA programs by a government-declared search for God in space. In stark contrast, the astronauts were selected and groomed to be straight arrows, mainstream technological geeks with the ‘right stuff’ who shunned, nor were properly capable of, mystical, poetic, and metaphysical discussions of their endeavors. It could cost them flying time, as apparently occurred to Scott Carpenter after he was distracted but for moment with the splendor beneath his orbit.
Oliver’s best chapter concerns the astronauts own experiences and how they were avatars of all humanity. The cramped capsules, programmed technical activities, and poor visibility minimized any visual epiphanies. A few religious pilots considered public communion and one of Apollo 14 brought 100 microfilmed Bibles to the moon. Four of the first 11, the Mercury group, did come back moved beyond simple awe, turning stronger to their raised religion, or if predisposed, to doubt and to an independent spirituality and of deeper relationships of connectiveness of Star Stuff, including people.
Oliver’s weakest chapter, my only criticism, is on the new spiritual direction of Americans in the 1960s. He does not elaborate about this shift in the mainstream, and he only gives one short paragraph on the cultural revolution, largely dismissing it as noisy but inconsequential, and says absolutely nothing about the increasing use of entheogens [LSD, cannabis, peyote, mushroom] by a population encompassing more than hippies. His assumption that quantum mechanical principles were influencing religion was placed too early, as the average Joe and Jane hardly heard of quantum theory until Fritjof Capra’s popular and influential book, Tao of Physics, appeared late, in 1974. Indeed, Oliver focuses solely on Christianity and Paul Tilich; no discussion of the Jewish perspective, among other religions, is given. Oliver’s many quotations from Norman Mailer would have served as a beginning. Even in the Epilogue, where he mentions the Challenger disaster and school teacher Christa McAuliffe, he failed to mention two other casualties, the first Jewish astronaut Judith Resnik and the first Buddhist astronaut Ellison Shoji Onizuka.
Humanity has always had a thirst to go beyond the horizon, and space, particularly since Jules Verne, was and remains the final frontier. Ascension is a religious theme. The religious public gazed upon the Saturn V launches as sacred; scientists and engineers regarded in awe their sound and size, power and precision; but for futurists and future Spocks and Kirks, they were the first milestones of many steps. This book ably presents the role of religion, but I do not agree with Oliver’s conclusion that the absence of overt religious meaning in space exploration brought the Space Age to a close. Has he heard of the Hubble Telescope?

Review: An excellent, very thoughtful inquiry into the cultural undercurrents upon which the Apollo program moved. Oliver has a strong grasp of modern religious impulses and trends, in theology, intellectual life, society, and popular culture, and he shows how these influenced and were influenced by the Space Age. He is also a good writer.
