Pillars of Eternity 2 Deadfire

The resurgence of classic CRPG games was kicked off a few years ago when Divinity Original Sin and Pillars of Eternity were successful in both retail and crowdfunding markets, as well as critical reception. Since then, a steady stream of such games were pumped out which overall good success. Now Pillars of Eternity 2, a direct sequel to the first game has come out to show that this was not a fad and these games are here to stay.

Pillars of Eternity 2 Deadfire

The new comers to Pillars of Eternity 2 Deadfire might feel a bit lost. As much as the game tries, those who have not played Pillars of Eternity will feel like they are suddenly have been brought in to this world. The game picks up right after the events of Pillars of Eternity with the god Eothes kicking everything you worked for to the ground, leaving you to try to gather what the hell is his problem.

Pillars of Eternity 2 Deadfire

The game is split into two sections, sea traveling as a captain of a ship, and the classic moving around in different locations getting into all kinds of trouble. The sea traveling part comes with the ability to manage a ship, from upgrades to crew morale and the like. Disappointingly, the sea battles are a weird mix of turn and text based which feel too random and artificial.

The land section of course fare better, with some seriously in depth fight system and numerous options to approach the wide variety of quests. Battles are real time that can be paused as needed, which can be micro-managed for each unit alongside a robust AI system that can be customized. Quite frankly, the combat system in Pillars of Eternity 2 Deadfire is nothing short of impressive. All this complexity can be daunting for newcomers to the genre, there are many abilities with long texts that need to be read, numerous defenses and weaknesses that need to be exploited, and many lines of dialogue that need to be listened to.

Whatever you might think of this, Pillars of Eternity 2 Deadfire is a huge games with hours upon hours of gameplay that awaits the patient and the brave! In spite of some shortcomings, such some missions not showing any noticeable impact on the game world. long winded dialogue and text at some places and the reliance on the story and knowledge from the first game, Pillars of Eternity 2 Deadfire is a great game that is sure to please any classic RPG game looking to lose themselves in a world for tens of hours.
