He put in real words what every advertiser should be trying to do
When Seinfeld says Advertising is nothing more than overstate a lie about a product to its audience, he is not wrong. Advertising is not only that, but also is a thing we most often need to believe in order to escape from the real world where we live, work and die, continuously trying to be happy.
Being an Advertiser I should say that comedians like Seinfeld have the talent to put things straight for not being held by any of social standards we all are put through.
Yes, he is supposed to be funny and not taken 100% serious. That is why everything he’s said is so important for us to fully understand the role Advertising has in the modern society.
GoPro case
Lets take GoPro as an example. Watch this:
I challenge you to watch this video and tell yourself you don’t want to live a life full of adventure like those guys. That is advertising working. That tiny camera is not going to turn us into real adventurers but we don’t want to get that. WE WANT IT! Simply as that. Having that camera will get us closer to be what those guys are.
If you think GoPro sells cameras, think again. They sell you joy, adventure, happiness, friends, youth.
If you think Advertising doesn't have an influence over you, sorry to tell you but Starbucks don’t sell you coffee as well.
Next time you watch a commercial, please don’t think you are being manipulated. Adverting is not a Capitalism’s weapon. We just turn ordinary products into something you really need/want/aspire. After all, why would I pay so much for a hot drink?
