The medical industry in India has been growing by leaps and bounds in the last few years. The country’s medical facilities are being sought after by international clients, so much so that the medical tourism industry of India garnered business worth $3 billion in October 2015. India has also been categorized as one of the lowest costing countries when it comes to medical procedures, with costs being almost one-tenth of the procedures in the United States. So what are the most popular procedures in India?

Bone Marrow Transplants

Bone marrow transplants are very popular in India. A bone marrow transplant is basically replacing unhealthy and damaged bone marrow stem cells with healthy and functioning ones. It is a preferred procedure to cure diseases like leukemia and Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

In-vitro Fertilisation

In-vitro fertilization or IVF is the process of combining an egg with a sperm outside the body. IVF is mostly chosen by couples who are unable to procreate naturally. IVF fertility treatments are very popular in India because the treatment is very expensive internationally, but it is considerably cheaper in the country.

Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery

Colloquially known as heart bypass surgeries, coronary artery bypass surgeries are conducted to resume normal blood flow to the coronary artery, which is blocked. The surgery is important as the coronary artery controls blood flow to and from the heart muscle itself and not the main circulatory system. A lot of world renowned heart surgeons are Indians, therefore their expertise and skills are sought after internationally.

Liposuction

The removal of fat with the help of surgery is called liposuction. The process is more cosmetic than health related and the liposuction costs in India are relatively lower compared to the international rates. The procedure is generally conducted using general or local anesthesia.

Hip Resurfacing

Hip resurfacing is a procedure done for people who are either suffering from any joint related diseases or have birth defects affecting the hip region. It is mostly used as an alternative to replacing the hip bone totally. Hip resurfacing is a procedure that can be risky and prone to complications if it is not performed by an experienced or skilled doctor. Luckily, India boasts of doctors who have a better success rate compared to their counterparts in other countries, therefore making it a preferred place for this kind of surgery.
