Thanks for the kind words.

You are right — it’s a simple formula, but very hard for most people to put into practice. I lost focus for just a few weeks over the summer and put on seven pounds. I got back on track as son as my jeans got tight and I’m about half way back to where I should be.

Something new I leaned…

I live in Tucson and work at a school, so I can wear shorts all summer long. The elastic waistband expands along with my belly, so if I don’t weigh myself every day I don’t notice that I’m gaining weight. But I notice that I’m eating more than I should yet I don’t stop. Psychologists call it the What the Hell Effect. Really.

Even though I know this — and wrote about it here — I still fell victim to it.

As for turning down food, I stumbled across a technique that works for me. I just say,

“I’m sorry, but I can’t eat that sort of thing, bad for my heart,” implying I have a food allergy or something, and quickly change the subject.

It’s not really lying, and the conversation usually ends there.

Thanks for your comments and best of luck on your future health. If you have any tips or suggestions please let me know.
