Title: Insightful

Review: This book is pretty depressing but also insightful. The torment that schizophrenics go through because of their inner demons, the medical establishment, public opinions, lack of social support, and family issues. It’s a lot. It is fascinating to see this from the inside.
The fact that she has an identical twin is not really important to the story. They seem no closer than non-twin siblings, but maybe that’s the point?
I have a sister with schizophrenia so this is especially important to me. I can really relate to the sister’s POV. It is incredibly frustrating to deal with someone who has this. My sister is different in that she is not suicidal, which just means she can’t get hospitalized because she is not a threat to herself or others. But is impossible to have any kind of conversation with her. No matter what I say, her response is nonsensical.
Anyway, if you have this, I think it would help you to see that others are going through something similar. If you deal with someone with this, I think it helps to know that your feelings and frustrations are shared by others.

Title: Totally relatable!

Review: I was able to know about this book after googling about schizophrenia. I googled about schizophrenia because my sibling thinks he has it. When I saw that the authors are twins, I was surprised because the sibling I was talking about is my twin brother. When I finished reading the book, I was quite disappointed because they actually have not found a way to completely resolve their problem about Pamela. But then I immediately realized that the book is not about curing schizophrenia but the recollection of memories and experiences of the twins sisters in dealing with Pamela’s disease. I can really tell that my brother’s experiences are nothing compared to what Pamela had experienced. But I can totally relate to the thoughts and experiences of Pamela and Carolyn, because my brother and I also experienced them.

Review: This book stopped my heart and stole it for very personal reasons. It is, in turns, full of pain, love, despair, brilliance, hope and madness. The authors are uncompromising in their honesty and thus gift us with a most amazing window …actually more of a door…into the world of schizophrenia. If you ever want to come close to understanding the tortured universe of a friend or loved one …especially one who grew up in the 60s and 70s…this book will open your eyes and hold them open. Incredibly beautiful, brave, raw and ravaging is this journey through their telling.

Review: Divided Minds is the true story of American identical twins Carolyn and Pamela Spiro growing up in the 1960s. It spans from 1958 to 2003.
Author Pamela Wagner was always the quieter twin until adolescence. As she entered her teenage years her life became more prominent due to the onset of her ‘illness’ — chronic paranoid schizophrenia. Pamela reflects on her childhood with her sister in 1958. And 1963–1969. Carolyn also writes sections on her perspective of the same events, as Pamela develops voices in her mind. In their writing, they try to pinpoint the events leading to Pamela’s brain shift.
With Pamela hospitalized, their parents expect Carolyn’s mind to snap too. But Carolyn shines academically, graduating from Harvard Medical School in psychiatry. The sisters’ bond remains as tight as glue.
Pamela is released from the state hospital in the mid-1980s, not knowing what she is going to do. The voices in her head continue. Her flat-mate Mariah introduces Pamela to poetry: ‘it is as if a long-barred door has swung open and I am given a vision of an unimaginably lovely landscape: poetry, poetry! Like the deep crimsons and gold-veined ochres of buttes rising above the tableland of the ordinary.’ Life does not miraculously get better, but now there is a purpose and an outlet for her feelings and thoughts.
This is an interesting, poignant account of schizophrenia from two perspectives that show that life is not identical, and neither is the reaction of identical twins to the same event that changed their lives.

Review: I also have an identical twin sister who is schizophrenic and bipolar. I found this to be a very compelling, interesting book to read. My sister’s mental problems seem minor compared to those of ‘Pamela. Pamela’s story hit me hard and I could finally understand my sister’s illness. This book was very helpful to me.
