I imagine in future what we will really need are jobs, clothing, food and shelter rather than more video games and apps to tell us that it is raining or where the nearest bar is, however useful these electronic aids may be to humanity….

I would suggest that perhaps what you are seeing is in fact the beginning of the end of the liberal left orthodoxy that has dominated the West since the late 19th Century and the end of the dominance of Western thinking throughout the world as many countries abandon the Western liberal democratic model. The conservative backlash may be just beginning. Bear in mind that the Middle East and Africa North of the Equator is almost all what you would term ‘conservative’ and have no prospect of becoming California anytime soon.
