Mateja, I think you did very well, to write this. You addressed here the real obstacle in self-publishing (or publishing at all…). If one is not prepared to this, technical insights are useless.

Surely artists have to know some of the business, but I’m not convinced that they have to be in the business. The products of culture are arbitrary, but of a rather different nature than manufactured goods or services. Do we want all teachers, for example, to self-financing? Do we protect nature only because someone wants to pay for it? Culture and art need support because the free market model tends to material, not intellectual or spiritual well-being. I’m not suggesting anything in particular, but at least we should let patronage have its sacred dignity.

Nowadays, a lot of writing is a byproduct of other activities. Or is simply meant to entertain. Or it’s simply business. It’s a really tough competition for those who are all-in in creative writing, and for all self-publishing in general.
