The Nest

And the magic of life.

The balcony of the house where I and my wife are spending our holidays had a little gift under the roof: a nest.

For days, there was a great coming and going to bring food to the new three chirping birds.

One day, one of them fell from the nest, within the balcony. It was not easy to get out of there without flying. After a full day, it found his way out. Then the other two bravely followed him. It was a pleasure to have them as special guests, even if the balcony was not accessible for two days. Also, we were worried about their well-being and their ability to spontaneously escape from the balcony and survive in an area that may be dangerous for them (one cat, in particular, seemed to be on its game…).

Looking them, and worrying about them, had some magic inside.

For me and my wife, and other persons who love animals, those little beings have the power of instantly remove all concerns from the troubled mind. There are reasons why pet company is a therapy.

Beyond the sympathy and the sense of protection that they arouse, their fragile and simplified life some way remembers ours. It’s absolutely clear that they do not master the universe. They risk from one day to another to die of starvation or cold, or to be a lunch.

Strangely, we do not feel being at risk like them. Nor powerless. On the contrary, we are often presumptuous, we think we are someone, we feel in control of what we know. We consider our concerns as the concerns of the world.

These little birds make me clear my relative position in time and space. Make me appreciate the magic of life, with its power that it’s not in greatness, or in mightiness, or in the works, but rather in the simplicity of being here. For birds, is flying and tweeting. As long as their fate permits. For humans is being present, expressing, growing, loving. As long as their fate permits.
