A thought about her chances on winning first grand slam title on Us Open

Eight players are fighting for the number 1 spot on WTA rankings and danish Caroline Wozniacki is one of them. The former world number 1 (still without a grand slam title) has another chance to make it real. The dane has reached six (!!!) finals in 2017, but failed to convert any of them. She showed more than once that she is capable of winning a major, reaching two finals in New York (2009, 2014) loosing both to better players (Clijsters, S. Williams).

The field

Garbine Muguruza - the Wimbledon and Cincinnati champ, Karolina Pliskova (now ranked n.1) and Simona Halep are the most likely players to win the title. So what can we expect for Caroline?

The path

She opens the tournament against qualifier Mihaela Buzarnescu and could face russian Ekaterina Makarova or german Mona Barthel in the second round. As they are tough players for early rounds it won’t be easy, but she has 3–0 against Barthel and an impressive 7–0 against Makarova.

Possible opponents in the draw:

Third round: Carla Suarez Navarro/Monica Puig/Mirjana Lucic Baroni
Round of 16: Kiki Bertens/V. Williams
Quarterfinals: G. Muguruza/P. Kvitova
Semifinals: J. Konta/S. Halep/M. Sharapova
Final: Ka. Pliskova/E. Svitolina/A. Kerber

Why she could go all over the way?

With six finals this year, she probably don’t want to loose another one. Her major problem (no jokes here) could be against Venus Williams, a player she never won before. Wozniacki’s game is more solid this year and she has proved to be ready to win her first major title.

What do you think about her winning in New York?
