Introducing the Part-time Visionary

In thinking about my first blog as the Part-time Visionary, I wanted to write about something that would encapsule the big picture of reality as much as possible. So I’m going to talk about a video that has really stuck with me over the past few days.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGK84Poeynk

It was done by The Symphony of Science, a musical project headed by John Boswell, designed to deliver scientific knowledge and philosophy in musical form. It features the words of some of my nerd heroes like Carl Sagan, Neil deGrasse Tyson and Bill Nye the Science Guy.

Language is still the main portal through which we can exchange ideas about what is happening around us. And as the New Age begins to settle-in, current language is going to have to adapt faster to encompass all the radical new ways we will relate to our reality. Words like God, spirit, awareness, light, etc. have become so bloated with interpretation as to render the meaning of the words somewhat useless, because everyone has a slightly different perspective about what these words mean.

If you believe in what modern science is beginning to tell us, our collective awareness is growing exponentially to the point where it is outpacing the ability of language to keep up in real time. So new ideas and concepts get blanketed with the old words that unfortunately tend to cloud the new understanding. I wonder if that’s one of the main reasons that M-theory, string theory and relativity only seem to be world-changing radical ideas to the scientists who study these subjects.

In the video Dr. Tyson talks (autotunes☺) about the implications of humans finally starting to grasp that what is actually going on out in the universe is also going on inside every atom of our bodies. And as he says he wants to grab people in the street and scream, “Have you heard this?” because he understands the ramifications of the discovery and it blows his mind. It blows my mind too, and perhaps that is part of the problem.

We were all taught from childhood that the universe is Newtonian. Any part of reality that wasn’t physical and tangible was thrown into the scrapheap of the unknown, mystical or miraculous. So words like ghosts, dreams, death, God, light and extra dimensions become subjects distorted by each person’s differing perspective. These concepts are outside of our Newtonian box of experience, and therefore don’t have a common frame of reference on which everyone can agree. Well the lid has been pryed off this can of worms. The word on the true nature of reality is officially out if you haven’t noticed, trickling out year by year since the days of Einstein. It’s just a matter of how long it will take for the whole world to embrace our own nature, beyond what we see, hear, smell, touch and taste from day to day.

This bridging of the crazy up-side down world of quantum physics, black holes, string theory and relativity with our everyday world of chance, luck, culture, beliefs and relationships will be the underlying focus of my blog. But we live in the ‘real’ world, so all of this New Age goo is just subtext for my thoughts on music, geo-politics, economics, travel, science and technology. Thank you for reading!
