The process typically involves several steps: image analysis to identify key anatomical landmarks and clothing types, body shape estimation based on visible contours, texture synthesis to generate skin details, and finally, clothing removal and replacement with generated nude content.
The ethical implications of this technology are profound and multifaceted. At its core, the creation and distribution of these images represent a gross violation of consent and privacy. The subjects of these manipulated images have not given permission for their likeness to be used in this manner, and the potential for abuse is staggering. From blackmail and harassment to revenge pornography, the malicious applications of this technology are numerous and deeply concerning.

A landmark case has emerged from San Francisco, where the City Attorney’s office has filed a lawsuit against 16 of the most frequently visited AI-powered “undressing” websites. The lawsuit alleges violations of state and federal laws banning revenge pornography, deepfake pornography, and child pornography, as well as California’s unfair competition law. It seeks not only to shut down the offending websites but also to permanently prevent their operators from creating deepfake pornography in the future. The research finds a specific pattern in how sextortion victims manage fear and stress, showing that coping methods change over time. It also highlights differences in how men and women cope, suggesting the need for personalized help. These findings are important for creating better policies and support systems for victims and recognizing their changing psychological needs. Overall, this study adds to our understanding of cyber sextortion and helps develop more effective ways to support victims and prevent these crimes.
Deepfakes can be created with just a few images or videos. In our highly connected digital world, it is nearly impossible for individuals to remove their likenesses from the internet completely. Even those who carefully manage their online presence could potentially be targeted through covertly captured photographs in real-world settings.
Deepfakes and Minors
In December 2022, a troubling incident in Florida may set a significant legal precedent. Two middle school students, aged 13 and 14, were arrested and charged with third-degree felonies for allegedly using an AI application to generate and distribute explicit images of their classmates. This case is believed to be the first in the United States where criminal charges have been brought in relation to AI-generated nude images. The charges were made possible by a 2022 Florida law that criminalizes the dissemination of deepfake sexually explicit images without consent. While this legislation wasn’t specifically crafted with AI in mind, it’s now being applied in this context. Unfortunately, this isn’t an isolated incident. Schools across the country are grappling with similar issues as AI tools capable of generating realistic fake nude images become more accessible. In February this year, a New Jersey teen is suing a classmate for allegedly creating and sharing AI-generated pornographic images of herself and another classmate. The ease with which these images can be created and shared poses significant challenges for educators, law enforcement, and legislators alike.
Revenge Porn
While revenge pornography has only recently gained widespread cultural attention, its origins can be traced to the 1950s. Despite its nearly seven-decade history, there remains a significant gap in the scientific understanding of this phenomenon and its treatment within criminal justice systems. Not a sexual crime

This omission in the legal framework further contributed to the public exposure and ongoing victimization of individuals whose privacy had already been violated. The term “revenge porn” is commonly used to describe this act. However, this terminology is problematic for several reasons. It implicitly places blame on the victims by suggesting that they have engaged in behaviour that warrants “revenge,” thus detracting from the perpetrator’s responsibility and the serious violation of consent involved in such actions.
