- Spoliarium by Juan Luna(Oil on Canvas)

The famous Spoliarium was painted by Juan Luna, a filipino painter, during the Spanish colonial period in the Philippines. The painting shows how cruel are the Spaniards to the Filipinos. Every time I see this masterpiece, it reminds me of our freedom and peace today. It reminds me of our Filipino ancestor who risk their lives just to attain our freedom.
2. Pamilya by Vicente Silva Manansala(Oil on Canvas mounted on wood)

I really don’t know much about the artist behind this painting but when I saw this artwork it reminded me of something. For me the “Pamilya” painting symbolizes the culture and values of the Filipinos. The message it conveys is that during meal times, Filipino always eat together and before they eat, they give thanks and praise to for the food they’re about to eat.
3. Death March by Dominador Castaneda(Oil on Canvas)

The Death March was the forceful march ordered by the Japanese troops to the Filipinos and Americans. There origin was from Bataan to Pampanga(97km). It was a physical abuse by the Japanese and thousand of Filipino and American soldier died from that March. This painting tells me to appreciate and give thanks to what our fellow Filipino and American soldier did for us. Because of them, it help us to fight for freedom and attain stoppage from World War II.
4. The Staions of the Cross: XII Jesus dies on the cross by an unknown Bohol Master(Oil on Panel)

This painting talks about our faith. It is a panting of our savior Jesus Christ. It truly shows that God loves us because he sent down his only begotten son to save us from sin and save humanity. It tells us the importance of praying and going to Holy Masses because it is a way of giving thanks and praise to God and Jesus Christ.
5. Modern Maria Claraby Victorio C. Edades(Oil on Canvas)

This is a painting of Maria Clara. Maria Clara was the ideal Filipino woman. She was a fictional character in the novel Noli me tangere by Dr. Jose Rizal. She is like the goddess of a Filipino woman because she has all the characteristics of what a Filipino woman must have. She is gentle, religious, and respectful. Another message of this is that Filipino woman(of today and tomorrow) should act like her. Not those who doesn’t have respect to herself.
6. Gayuma by Cenon Rivera( Oil on Canvas)

The word “gayuma” means enchantment. This where some of the beliefs of our ancestor which is still done by some today. It done by “albularyo” to easily get the attention and love of someone they want to be with. Still, i think “gayuma” is an inappropriate act. If we want someone to be ours, we should properly court her/him. There is no easy way in getting into love but if there is, it is easy also to get out of it.
7. Arko na Pagkakaisa para sa Kalayaan by Edgar Talusan Fernandez(Oil on Canvas)

Unity. This is what I interpret about this painting. If we want to have freedom, we must be equally united and help one another to strongly attain it. This was painted during Marcos regime. During Marcos’ term, he was very abusive of power and wealth but gave an big contribution to our country. We could see Corazon Aquino in the painting who was a big contribution to the fall of the Marcoses. Help one another because it is we that got each other back.
8. Returning from the Fields by Manuel Rodriguez, Sr.(Oil on Canvas)

The painting tells us that Filipinos are truly industrious and helpful to one another. As you could see from the painting, this are Filipino farmers who just came from harvest. After they finish harvesting wheat, they all go home from the fields together. The painting also gives me the message of value our rice. It is very hard to produce it and if we value it, we are like giving thanks and importance to the farmers.
