Utterly fascinating. I played chess seriously and heard many (male) players consistently argue the lack of women at a high level was because they ‘just weren’t built to play chess seriously.’ My (simplistic I now realise) rebuttal was its a sample size problem, since the genetic lottery is evenly distributed. But I had failed to grasp the myriad of the nuances you’ve laid out, and have learned an enormous amount here. Have saved it for a re-read, the first time I have ever done so on Medium.
