Simple As Socks
The Beginning
I did a Facebook post putting the call out for socks to be distributed amongst homeless. A piece of that post:
I am starting the project of collecting socks for the homeless……1) I can easily carry them throughout the day 2) As someone who walks all day, regardless of the weather, I know the sensation of having sopping socks & sneakers. But I just change them. Not these people. And what they do change, the “socks” I’ve seen compare to swiss cheeze. I can hear my dad yelling all sorts of Vietnam advice about keeping your feet dry & safe from infection & that’s exactly what’s happening with the homeless. I see infections crawling up their ankles that are grotesque.
Last winter I did a project where I collected scarves & tied them up around the city w/tags reading, “I’m not lost. If you need me, take me.” I saw that on the interwebs & I decided to keep pushing that idea. It’s the same w/this one. I am not claiming originality to it but just pushing another person’s idea along.
I have no intention to stop any time soon. I also know there are socks waiting in the wings for me. I am beginning to write out what has happened thus far because I am currently out of socks & I don’t want to wait any longer updating people. I don’t want anyone to think I have forgotten. Also, people have left me some other supplies and I have done my best to distribute them as well.
Quite often I have noted time/place/a guesstimate of ethnicity & age of receiver & anything else I felt worth mentioning.
I don’t know how scientific any of that is. It does seem pretty random. But I suppose I’m seeing if any patterns emerge.
Additionally, feel free to copy this project and/or if you have any socks/supplies at your home you just want to distribute on your own, do it to it! If you’d like to make any notes about your donations and submit them to this page that would be most welcome.
I called this project Simple As Socks because it can be so easy to give help. I’m convinced everyone in every walk of life is capable of something.
