I’m a lifelong dabbler and have always felt the same vague sense of guilt at not sticking with things long enough to become great at them. However, it hasn’t stopped me from dropping each craze as soon as I find the next one. Accordingly, I like what you’ve written about dabbling being good in itself. Thank you for justifying our lifestyle. :D

I also agree with your points. I’ve made some important discoveries and met some amazing people through dabbling. Best of all are the memories to look back on. Especially as a writer, it’s great to have tried out many things. For example, I can describe exactly how it feels to fall out of a sailing boat into cold lake water, because it happened to me during one of my dabbles.

A certain line in a poem by Erica Jong always stuck out to me:

..she dabbles brilliantly

in half a dozen talents

& thus embellishes

but does not change

our life.

Yet another source telling us that dabbling is bad. But what’s wrong with a finely embellished life, I’d like to know?
