I remember when I was reading MetaMaus: A Look Inside a Modern Classic, Maus, the hardest part was getting to the family trees and seeing all the branches that, as you said, “end somewhere around 1942”.

I remember mentioning it to my mother, who worked at a Jewish community center, and she recalled how pretty much none of her Jewish co-workers who were her age had ever met their grandparents.
