It amazes me that there are still Republicans who say things like, “nobody ever died from lack of health insurance”.

Taken in a literal sense, that’s true. The paper your insurance policy is printed on has no curative powers by itself. However, it gives access to life-saving treatments and medication that would otherwise be unaffordable, without which quite a few people would otherwise die.
