One of the most common justifications for the EC I hear is along the general lines of “if we elected with the popular vote, candidates would only go to heavily populated areas and completely ignore sparsely populated rural areas.”

Yet with the EC, candidates focus on about four or five battleground states and ignore the rest. Why is this better?
