This can play out two ways. If the Republican-controlled Congress and Senate were to recognize that Trump is toxic to their party, they could impeach and convict now, and this would give them time to rehab their party — hopefully in time for the 2018 midterms. This would no doubt be the best scenario for them if they wish to keep their jobs.

The other way it could play out is for the Republicans to do nothing and hope this all just goes away, and that Trump will somehow quit screwing up. I think we all know that the outrage-du-jour thing from Trump is just going to keep happening, and will be getting worse. If the Republicans do nothing (or wait until closer to November 2018 to do something), they will lose the House in the 2018 midterms, and possibly the Senate. And once the Democrats are in control, they’re going to put a stop to this. Meanwhile, the GOP will be in tatters, much as it was in the wake of Watergate.

If I were a Republican, I’d be casting Trump off. He’s not helping their party.
