While I doubt that Oklahomans would seriously discriminate against people who type in ALL CAPS (and such people aren’t a protected class anyway), there will no doubt be some who will discriminate against interracial couples because that would violate their “religious beliefs”.

This law, even if it wasn’t badly written (which it is), is destined to wind up before the SCOTUS, and will probably be struck down. Even when the court is tilted toward conservatives, the SCOTUS has a history of allowing people to worship as they please and hold any religious beliefs they want, but draw the line at imposing those religious beliefs on others (the Hobby Lobby decision being a rare case to the contrary).

If this law ever sees the light of day, and before it’s struck down, I imagine that Yelp and other social media will take care of any business choosing to discriminate on the basis of a client’s sexual orientation (or race, or any other reason) on the basis of “religious beliefs”.

By the way — are LGBT people a protected class in Oklahoma now? No? Then businesses in Oklahoma may currently discriminate against same sex couples, can they not? So why the fuss? Just asking. It sounds as if their legislature just wants to make some noise to proclaim their bigotry.

As a resident of North Carolina, I caution Oklahoma about passing unnecessary discriminatory laws that get a lot of negative press. North Carolina lost a lot of money when they passed a completely unnecessary bathroom bill. We lost major sporting and entertainment events, conventions and trade shows, and even businesses who intended to relocate or expand here wound up going elsewhere. Just saying. Although we’d be pleased to pass the title of “biggest asshole state” to someone else.
