“Yes Russia attempted to meddle in our elections but there is no proof they were ever successful in their meddling or in impacting the outcome.”

I see. So as long as they weren’t “successful”, that makes everything just okey-dokey fine? No harm, no foul? Do you feel the same way about people who attempt murder but aren’t successful? Or attempt rape but aren’t successful?

We have some evidence already that the Russians’ shenanigans did affect the outcome — an obvious correlation between Hillary’s poll numbers and the various WikiLeaks dumps, and how the timing lines up. But even if the Russians didn’t affect the election results, any evidence that anyone from the Trump team colluded with the Russians on their efforts will spell trouble for them.
