I’m moving to San Fransisco!! A few days ago, I accepted an offer from a Canadian tech startup to work as a Business Development Manager in their SF office. It’s finally hitting me that I am moving to the West Coast in another country and I am freaking out.
Let me preface this by saying that I have never travelled to the West Coast. Outside of my hometown (Vaughan, the city above Toronto), I’ve only travelled to Québec, New York, Mexico and the Dominican Republic. So I’m not really sure what to expect but I’m excited!!
3 Random Thoughts and Timbits
1) Rent — Is it really $3000 a month?!
Rent Price: It’s hard to get a good grasp on what to expect in terms of rent prices. On the internet, it seems like rent prices range from $2500 to $3500 per month. However, talking to some friends from their experiences in SF, getting a place under $2000 a month seems realistic (but requires a lot of research).
Are there any tools you can recommend that can help me find an affordable place to rent?
Neighbourhoods: Is there a better area to live in? How do I go about finding the right fit? I’ve read some descriptions but I’m trying to take them each with a grain of salt. For me, safety and being located near work is most important for me.
2) Roommates — How do I find awesome people?
Relating to the high rent prices, I’ve been advised to get a roommate to help split the cost. However, I’m not sure how to go about finding a roommate. I’ve signed up for RoomieMatch but I’m hesitant about dating-like websites. I’m also weary of sites like Craigslist and Kijiji, so I’m really hoping to tap into my personal network to find the best roommate.
What’s the best way to find a roommate in SF? I’ve heard that it’s like getting a job (requires interviewing and several stages).
(Side note: I wish I could live with Emily Miller because she is the coolest roommate ever. I will miss her forever.)
3) Tech Scene
I’m excited to be surrounded by people who live and breathe technology. I hear that there are lots of free events and I love meeting new people. I am passionate about tech startups but I feel that moving to SF, that passion will be amplified by 10000%.
To be completely honest, I’ve never been to SF and the show Silicon Valley is really my only reference point. And yes, I know that it’s just a show and highly exaggerated but it’s all I know.
For those of you in SF, what are your favourite events to go to?
