•Witness By: Florencia Mota
-The title of the artwork itself says the literal meaning of the word “witness” it is how people see or view something happened. This artwork for me depicts how people judge situations and how they observe other people based on their actions. Usually people who are witnesses are good in observing just like what we can see in the artwork they all look like they are observing something.
•Man and Woman By: Marcelino Rodriquez
-This artwork for me shows the comparison and contrast between a man and a woman. On the left side we can see the physical features of a man while on the right side we have the physical features of a woman which was seen repetitively in different boxes. At first glance you wouldn’t notice anything but if you look closely you will see the differences among the two genders.
• Tahanan By: Manuel Baldemor
-This artwork for me shows how the form of shelter of indigenous people were before. This is a reminder for us how early filipinos had a great impact on how we live today. We can see how our culture evolved because now we have buildings, condominiums, subdivisions and more.
•White Horse By: Hugo Yuzon
-This artwork shows how significant it is to preserve our culture as Filipinos. Kalesa is one of the main attractions in Manila which is why most tourists prefer riding a horse rather than a car. This is something which makes our country unique.
What do you think is their purpose for doing so?
These artworks were placed in an art museum to remind people the values of a true Filipino.

•Portrait of Fernanda de Jesus By: Fernando Amorsolo
-This artwork shows how Filipinas before were inferior to the society and how their roles were circulated around men. Fernando Amorsolo painted a “Dalagang Filipina” to represent the ideal and traditional role of Filipinas. Which is to satisfy the needs of a man.
•Graduation By: Ricarte Paruganan
-This artwork for me shows how much we Filipinos give importance to education and it is a big achievement when someone graduates. It is also a rewarding moment for the parents who worked hard just to send their children to school. Education is something no one can take away from you. Not everyone is given the chance to study and being able to finish it, is something to be proud of. This artwork represents valuing oneself and recognizing all the accomplishments you’ve made.
•Nativity By: Ramon Estrella
-Nativity is the time when Jesus’ was born and this reminds me of Christmas. A time for happiness, catching up with family and most of all giving honor to Jesus. This artwork represents the value of life since this was the event when Jesus was born. Life may be rough at times but despite that we shouldn’t forget the good in every situation.
•The Parade, Independence Day (Nos. 223•224)
-This is very significant to every Filipinos lives because this is the time when we regained our freedom. The artwork shows how important Independence Day is to our lives and we should never forget it. Our national heroes fought whard to gain our country’s freedom. This artwork deserves to be recognized by thousands of people specially the new generation so that they wouldn’t forget the important things in the past.
•Phosphorescent Gospel By: Gerardo Tan.
-During the Spanish period, their main objective was to convert Filipinos to Christianity because of this most Filipinos are religious. These holy figurines in the museum show respect to the saints and to religion itself. It is just right to preserve it because it’s sacred meaning it should be something that is kept properly. It is also a reminder that we should never forget to put Jesus in the center of everything we do. Our country is known to be religious and valuing religion is a way of showing honor to the Lord.
Discuss how does this exhibition helped you understand and appreciate Philippine contemporary art better.
-The art exhibit helped me understand the different artworks because all of them had one thing in common and that’s giving importance to history and culture. The museum made it easier for me to interpret an artwork because each section had its own identity which showed similarities and it was organized.
3. Reflect on this Museum. How is MET Museum different from the National Museum?
-MET museum was more organized compared to National Museum not only that, MET museum had an entrance fee while National museum was free. The artworks in National Museum were all created by national artists while in MET it’s mixed. But overall both museums are knowledgeable when it comes to history and culture.
How was your visiting experience? Describe the kind of audience/visitors that are visiting the museum at the time you were also inside the place.
-When we visited National Museum. there were a lot of people due to the students having their field trip while for MET Museum there were quite fewer amount of people. The people in National Museum were noisy and active because of the field trip. Their security was strict, each floor had a security staff monitoring the discipline of the visitors and the staff also help maintain the artworks by making sure no one was disobeying rules. The staff in MET were approachable and quiet. They didn’t give much briefing when we entered unlike in National Museum there were rules to obey. Overall I enjoyed both Museums because I learned a lot and it made me realize things about our history and culture. These museums preserve and value our culture and make them aware about the things happened in the past which serves as a reminder for all of us.
