Thanks so much for taking the time to elucidate this. I especially liked the history. I’m an artist myself and was moved to make two ‘cartoons’ because I was just so filled with venom that words seemed almost dangerous. The ‘ideas’ were good; I posted them to Twitter and a week or two later saw one of them re-done — and in true political cartoon style — on the cover of Mad Magazine. I was pissed that my ‘idea’ had been ‘stolen,’ but for all I knew it was just out there to be plucked from the ethers and more than just me had snagged it.
I learned a lot from seeing ‘my’ work done by a professional. I lack the edge necessary to portray the venom I feel visually. My pieces looked more like something for a kids storybook. I have even more respect for political cartoonists now than I did before (except for one).
Cartooning seems to me to do for visual storytelling something like shorthand does for recording verbal information, capturing the essence… but always with that cutting edge! I admire your skill.
