As a Civil War writer I have very mixed feelings about this issue.
James M. Ridgway, Jr.

What I would like to see, I think, are Museums of the Civil War. The history NEEDS to be remembered and museums, because they provide ‘interpretation,’ function very well in that regard. And musuems provide protection for things/art that, without that context, might well be vandalized.
My daughter is an historian and runs a museum one of whose primary functions is dealing with the history of slavery in this country. Part of what such museums ensure is that ‘proof’ survives and that, too, has become important.
A museum (or museums) devoted to the Civil War could provide people with much needed context while providing a venue for “art” to be safeguarded as well as being seen by those who want to see it.
