À la recherche du temps perdu…

“The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.” — Marcel Proust

In Search of lost time…

“For someone who chooses singing for a living, uncertainty is nothing new. We never really know what’s going to come out of our mouths when we step out on the stage, even when we’ve had a fabulous warm-up in the dressing room. To sing is always an act of courage and an act of faith.” — Prof. Frohnmayer

Perhaps the single greatest work of art that has impacted me thus far has been Marcel Proust’s magnum opus, In search of lost time. The novel is mostly a consideration of how time slips through our fingers, and how we are alive but most of the time not properly attuned to the world around us. In other words, we’re constantly wasting our time.

The novel teachers readers to appreciate the uncertainty of life, and to make the most out of the time that we are given— to live in the now. This has been a great source of inspiration to me. In music, often times we are so preoccupied with minute details that we never really get to the music making aspect of the profession. We waste so much time stressing over every note that we sometimes lose sight of the essence of what it means to be in the serive of music. Every moment that we spend doing this, is a moment lost. A moment that we will never get back. Reading this work inspired me to actively seek out opportunities to better my craft so that when I am on stage, I am fearless in everyway.
