Great article, I believe is a perfect guide to be able to have a decent conversation about the challenges of this new technology and also to understand how groundbreaking is the offering of any new startup in the ecosystem.

Indoor AR is probably easier to enjoy by using a handheld device since you can do it without disturbing the world around you, risking your live or looking like a dork, so Apple is right by starting it’s ecosystem and developer community this way, but outdoor use cases are the most exciting ones with stuff like mapping, augment billboards, real state information and so on, a data layer on top or the world will be pretty transforming, the artistic representation of the future in a movie like Ghost in the Shell might be how the world will look when seeing through AR glasses.

A combination between a hud and actual AR will be ideal, each one has its own use cases where outshines the other. When just trying to enrich your interactions with the world, o provide an no pervasive data layer just when you needed, like your calendar, notifications, smart tips like your password or pin when you get to the ATM, don’t need to be attached to the world, it will be enough for them to be in your field of view with the right information at the right time. Here is where digital Assistants powered by computer vision and location enable AI will be key to make it happen.

I do agree with with John Gaeta that this might help us to look up again, but I can imagine a world with everybody is just looking at you with a weird and empty stare since they are not «there» anymore.

As for UI, there are so many companies working on creative interfaces to interact with programs avoiding physical contact with other devices like Googles Project Soli for example, but for all this to work an open ecosystem is vital, I believe no single company can solve all this challenges alone, not in the HW side and neither on the SW components needed to the experience to be enjoyable and adopted by most consumers.
