Buying your first suit can be a taxing experience. There are a lot of elements that come to effect here and can add to crafting the ideal look. While you’re still figuring out the cut and fit of your suit, the colour plays an equally significant role during your buying decisions.

The task at hand is choosing between the traditional blues and greys or getting experimental with the unconventional pastels and prints. What drives this decision is primarily your skin tone, body type and in some cases the occasion. Well, while we don’t usually root for the traditional norms of suiting, it’s always easy to start with the wardrobe staples.

The 3 essential colours offer not just versatility to your wardrobe but also give you the opportunity to make a comfortable transition into the suiting world. They are called “wardrobe staples” for a reason and here’s everything you need to know to get started.

The Customary Black

The most formal colour of the lot, black is associated with boardroom meetings, funerals and traditional events. The colour adds an earnest appeal to an individual’s look and is the prefered colour for black ties and formal forums. There are primarily 2 reasons to choose a black suit. One, that it works for most body types as it has a thinning effect on the wearer, and two, black is considered timeless and eternal and will never go out of style. So if you’re looking to invest in only one suit in the coming years, this should be the ideal choice for you.

The Classic Grey

You may have commonly noticed how Grey suits are often donned at weddings and ceremonies. This convention comes from the soothing, subtle, and understated nature of the colour. But while there are a plethora of grey hues you can experiment with, we’ve broken down the list to 3 common shades that work for your wardrobe based on your skin tone.

Light Grey — For the perfect casual look, we strongly advocate the lighter shades of grey. Ideal for the summer season, casual brunches, and daytime soirees, these shades add a relaxed and casual appeal to your everyday look.

Mid-Grey — Known for their all-season appeal, medium toned greys add the much needed youthful allure to your suit look. Varying from silver grey to cloud grey these shades work perfectly well for business casual and formal affairs.

Charcoal Grey — Charcoal grey is a great alternative to the customary black suit. Over the years, men have been substituting their formal gears for this adaptive shade as it adds a hint of freshness and boldness to their wardrobe.

A basic rule to follow while choosing a grey suit is “the darker your skin tone, the lighter the grey”. Darker shades such as Charcoal grey or Ash grey can make darker skin tones look washed out and dreary. The same applies to lighter shades and lighter skin tones.

The Versatile Blue

It was the Victorian era that brought navy blazers into a gentleman’s wardrobe and was traditionally worn for sporting, sailing and others social gatherings but today navy suits have established themselves as wardrobe staples. The colour Navy exudes confidence, versatility, and reliability, and hence when Tailorman chose the colours for the official suits for Bangalore Football Club, we naturally gravitated towards navy. The colour by itself is closely associated with men and their masculine appeal which further adds to the versatile nature of the hue.

Here’s how we’ve spotted some of our favourite men in this staple shade of the season.
