Control-M is a BMC product which provides comprehensive batch scheduling and monitoring capabilities. The BMC product consists of the Control-M Desktop and Control-M/Enterprise Manager. Used in conjunction, the Control-M Desktop sets up and schedules jobs, and the Control-M/Enterprise Manager provides the job monitoring tool. We have used this tool to schedule multiple jobs of all application groups managed by Suneratech.

Control-M Enterprise Manager (EM): The central GUI-based application where we manage all batch executions for the company. This is mainly an interface to the active job file (AJF) or queue. Multiple Control-M servers can be attached to an EM. When logging into Control-M, we typically are connecting here.

Architecture of the Control-M:

Sprint Nextel Control-M Environments:

Access to Control-M:

Follow the below steps to logging into Control — M

• Double click on the EM 6.2.01 icon

  • You will see the following dialog box:

• Login with your ACF2 id.

• The password is unique to Control-M. However, the recommendation is to make this password the same as your AD.

• If you need to login to a different EM, then click on the Advanced button.

• The CONTROL-M Enterprise Manager opens showing a gray window.

  • Select File > Open ViewPoint
  • Select All Jobs and Click OK. This will launch the Enterprise Manager window.

All Jobs is going to show you all jobs that are in the Active Job File (those scheduled to run that day — AND those jobs from prior day (s) that have either been placed on hold, and/or have abended and not exceeded their Max Wait. More on those terms later).

Enterprise Manager Window Layout:

There are 4 stages which we will be monitoring/operating from this window.

Four stages are: Servers, Groups, Applications and Jobs

Server: The first level that has server information

Group: Set by scheduling. Jobs are usually grouped by frequency.

Application: Set by scheduling; should be the application id

Jobs: Where we can actually view the list of jobs w.r.t Application.

Below is the screen where we can find Enterprise Manager Navigation Tree:

Type of Window Alert:

The alert window can be set up to automatically pop up when logging into Control-M. See the Tools -> Option window (select Alerts) for that setting. The last 1500 alerts are kept in the alert window.

Alerts can be filtered on many fields such as:

ü Application

ü Job name

ü Status

ü Many others

There are 3 statuses for each alert and below are the statuses information.

Ø Not Noticed: The status for a new alert. An “R” appears to the left of the alert, and the alert is highlighted in yellow (if a regular alert).

Ø Noticed: The alert has been acknowledged. The alert is highlighted in yellow (if a regular alert).

Ø Handled: The alert has been dealt with, typically meaning that the ticket is bypassed.

Control-M is used to monitor batch schedules/jobs from different application groups in multiple servers to reduce the resource manual work. It is also useful to track all the jobs information in one area which is Enterprise Management layout window with job statuses as success or failure.
