Some work, some work-out
Terwijl de erwtensoep pruttelt en de geur zich door het huis verspreidt, kan ik schrijven dat Gertjan op dit moment aan boord van het schip, de Africa Mercy is. Dat laatste vermeld ik er maar even bij, want met de Global Mercy die ook in het water ligt, kun je je dat afvragen.
Na een verplichte quarantaine, is het werk aangevangen. Volgens maritieme regelgeving zijn er met betrekking tot de veiligheid allerlei certificeringen noodzakelijk. Een speciaal team voert dit uit. Gertjan heeft daarbij geassisteerd.
88% van het reguliere onderhoud aan het schip is gedaan. Er volgt nog verdergaand Covid gerelateerd onderhoud om in de toekomst zo veilig mogelijk aan het werk te kunnen gaan in Afrika.
Aan boord zijn sommige mensen al drie-kwart jaar in een vorm van isolement, een deel van de mensen mag onder voorwaarden korte uitstapjes maken, maar een deel van de vrijwilligers mag dat volgens de huidige regelgeving nog niet. Vooral voor hen niet gemakkelijk, wel gelovend in de missie van Mercy Ships, (die natuurlijk onveranderd is), er zelf voor gekozen om aan boord te zijn en blijven werken maar geen vrijheid hebben. Een ‘verse’ vrijwilliger aan boord zoals Gertjan, geeft dan weer nieuwe impuls die verfrissend en anderen hopelijk tot zegen is.
Hoe het voelt om aan boord te zijn? ‘Thuis, maar toch ook weer niet thuis’ zegt Gertjan ‘het is wel vreemd. ‘t Doet me goed om op te trekken met de mensen aan boord. Net als met mijn militaire maten, gedeelde ervaring bindt je op een ander level.’
Hij mag nog even genieten van het werk aan boord, binnenkort mag hij dat vanuit Nederland voortzetten. ‘In de periode dat ik aan boord ben, had ik vier grote taken, die zijn bijna afgerond.’
‘Some work and some work-out’ is de grappige uitspraak van de huidige managing director aan boord. Ik kon er wel om lachen.

I can tell you this, Gerrit is currently on board the ship, the Africa Mercy. I just mention the name, because you could wonder if it would be the Global Mercy he is at.
After a 2-week quarantine, regular work has started. One of the things he is working on; Maritime regulations require certifications regarding safety. A special team is responsible for this to check off, Gertjan assists in this.
I am glad to be able to write that 88% of the regular maintenance on the ship has been done. Further Covid-related maintenance will follow after this in order to be able to work in Africa as safely as possible in the future.
Some people have been on board for three-quarters of the year in somewhat you could call, isolation. Part of the crew, depending of where the are from are allowed to take short trips under certain conditions, but some of the volunteers are not yet allowed to do so under current regulations. You can imagine, it is not easy. Believing in the mission of Mercy Ships, which of course remains unchanged, they chose to be on board and continue to work without freedom, that seems special to me. A ‘fresh’ volunteer on board, such as Gerrit, gives new influence that is refreshing and hopefully a blessing to others.
How does it feel to be on board? ‘At home, but not at home’ Gerrit says. ‘it is strange. It pleases me to hang out with the people on board. Just like with my military colleagues, shared experience binds you to another level.’
‘During this period on board, I had four major tasks, which are almost completed.’ He enjoy’s the specific work he needed to do on board, but soon will be able to continue his tasks remotely in the Netherlands.
‘Some work and some work-out’ is the funny saying of the current managing director on board..
