The 8-seed Providence Friars (18–14) made quick work of the 9-seed Butler Bulldogs in the 1st round of the Big East Men’s Championship on Thursday after defeating the Bulldogs by an 80–57 margin. Providence led by a 38–27 margin at halftime and pulled away early in the 2nd half after a 15–0 Friars run gave Providence a 58–37 lead with 12:05 left in regulation. Providence shot 55.8% from the field and 47.8% from beyond the arc in the victory. Leading the way for the Friars was Maliek White who had 19 points, 3 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals.
Coming into their game against Butler, Providence was averaging 71.4 ppg on 42.1% shooting from the field. The Friars were averaging 6.6 three-pointers per game on 33.0% shooting from beyond the arc.
