I’d say icons these days are getting simpler and simpler, perhaps a bit too simple. I don’t use iPhone, but the first time I tapped on it (iOS7), I had to guess what those thin lines mean. A good UI is a UI that most users recognize immediately and doesn’t have to be guessed the slightest.

If we used a floppy disc as an icon for these many years and decided for a change to a more “relevant” object, it would definitely make it worse than unchanged.
