This entire blog is based on the above Public Interest Litigation (PIL)which has now been rejected. Long Story short , High Court of Karnataka dismisses Public Interest Litigation for using sports ground for non sports activity saying “no violation, Local Governing Council is doing great job . It gives this ground only 5 days a month to for non sporting activity”.

For any sports person , start happens at a local ground and hence basic utility of having a playing ground for 365 days is very important. But unfortunately , in India we are on other side where a sports ground is used for all other purposes except sports

So what is the big deal about this , why does this happen, the way it is happening now ? Everything boils down to simple math of cost.

Renting National College Ground in Basavangudi (for which PIL was filed) for a day is 3000 Rs/day . This is in center of city , well connected . Accomodate 1000’s of people easily(it does not matter whether there are toilets, parking space etc.. ) . If we were do the same in a big auditorium ,for same number of people, cost is would be 100X more .

What is the side affect ?

Folks can’t play , no sport activity possible or even it is , it is very less .

Without playing for months, how do we bring up anyone to next level or even for competing ? I am not surprised tour ratio of population v/s talent pool is very less compared to lot of other smaller nations

To overcome this and also fact that residence were getting affected by noise, parking (police stopping you to go your own house for security reason) , Resident Welfare Association filed a Public Interest Litigation .

But our respectable High Court of Karnataka believed in local authority, who have not only given wrong information (or should we say they are famous for giving wrong information) and dismissed this petition.

Local Authority aka BBMP said “We dont give it more than 5 days a month”

Now let us look at reality

11 days of celebration + 7 days for preparations

As of now we have schedules as shown in the image which is around 18 days and some more days to remove the entire arrangement . Before this event we had 7 days for “Indira Canteen Inauguration“.

Grand Hall for the Event of “Indira Canteen Inauguration” on Aug 15th 2017

There you go, in a month of 31 days, 25 days were used for no sporting activity. This happens year round for one or other functions including some from elected representative for there NGO activites, some TV awards ceremony and some more for religious ceremonies .

Overall, in an year we loose around 50–60% for non sports activites. Thanks to local administrative body driven mostly by political power.

Shifting goal post so are our chances of winning medals

Sport related Grounds for cultural activity means our basic sport needs has been stolen , so are our gold medals from olympics. No wonder our population to medal ratio is very very less.

Cost of approaching court is so high a normal person or even resident welfare association would just not be able to handle it . So as of today we leave with problem at basic facility level even though at higher level there are great personality running/ identifying / nurturing talents for medals. Overall , i see the flow broken or is very very slow as compared amount of people we have.

Until Judiciary wakes up (takes a reality check) and solves some basic problem like these we can never go beyond couple of medals . Otherwise ,we would just end up celebrating what ever we get
