The NASA Perseverance Rover (aka Percy) made a successful landing on the planet Mars on February 18, 2021. The rover landed on a site called Jezero Crater, which is in the Syrtis Major quadrangle. This area is hypothesized to have once been filled with water, so the mission is to further explore and investigate for any signs of life. Missions to other planets like Mars are full of uncertainty, but it requires a “zero margin of error” for success. The NASA and JPL team plan for what to expect as well as for the unexpected. The landing could have gone…

The DeFi (Decentralized Finance) space would not be complete without a discussion on money legos. These are the building blocks for programmable money, performed by smart contracts and executed on a blockchain. The proliferation of decentralized applications is due to the infrastructure provided by the Ethereum blockchain network. It is one large decentralized network of nodes that has a world state, that checks the consistency and finality of a transaction.

Connecting these components together is the main concept of composability. In a way, it is a “middleware” that binds various protocols through an interoperability layer. In DeFi, these protocols are…

You may have already heard of a “rule” in photography that is called the Sunny 16 Rule. This is a metering technique that uses information from an exposure value system rather than a light meter. The difference is that it is based on incidental rather than reflective light as the source. This helps the photographer compensate for darkness and brightness in their subject, when shooting depending on the lighting condition. The basic rule is the following:

“Set the aperture to an appropriate lighting condition and the shutter speed to the reciprocal of the ISO setting when shooting.”

The concept of…

Colors from a computer vision perspective are made up of three primary pigments called RGB or “Red”, “Green” and “Blue”. The other colors in existence are processed from the wider gamut that consist of a combination of tones that originate from the RGB color scheme. A color filter must be used on a screen to display properly to the viewer. The most important element for displaying color is light, which display the color based on the wavelength of the light.

You can describe color as human readable when coding, but in reality that is a higher level of abstraction. A…

The OAuth (Open Authorization) protocol is a standard for delegating web access between websites without requiring the user to type their password. It is a way of granting permission to use a user’s account from another provider to gain access to a website. It is used by many companies that provide a service on the Internet (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Netflix). Although it is a more convenient way for users to access websites since it doesn’t require typing a password, it can also be exploited. …

If robots are going to take over the world, it is going to begin with Spot. That’s the now well known robot built by Boston Dynamics. Spot has been evolving, with new capabilities and advanced features as a result of research and development. What makes Spot different from other robots is that is very mobile, giving it abilities that one can consider remarkable. Alongside Spot are other robots from Boston Dynamics like BigDog, Atlas and Handle. …

Apple makes computers and phones. Tesla makes cars and batteries. One has been at the forefront of computing and communications products, while the other is at the cutting edge of the automotive industry. Apple is well known for taking ideas and reinventing products that set a trend in the computer industry. Tesla is a bold pioneer in developing unconventional technology in the auto industry. The comparisons are quite remarkable, but they are not directly in competition with one another.

As an innovator, this might be a good time for Apple to enter the auto industry. Apple have made it no…

Does buying more speakers improve the home sound experience? For me the answer would be no. It is not just about buying speakers and hooking up as many of them to your home theater system. You are either going to distort the quality of your sound system or totally miss the point of what makes sound quality good in the first place.

Playback for great audio quality is not just about the speakers. Quality in audio is not measured by one quantity alone. There is the pitch, intensity of loudness, tones and timbre among the many factors. These are several…

The Monte Carlo Tree Search (MCTS) algorithm is a solution to decision-making processes that require knowledge of a problem, and learning to solve the problem. The algorithm will predict the best possible outcome to provide the solution. It has been used in developing software for playing games like chess and go. Deep Mind used this technique when they created AlphaGo, the first successful computer program to defeat a professional human opponent in the game called go. Go is a complex game that requires intuitive thinking on many levels, something that would be a challenge to software engineers.

Developing software like…

An important indicator used in analyzing the price of an asset is the moving average. Averages provide traders an idea of which direction an asset’s price is trending, either on the upside (going up) or downside (going down). In terms of value, a moving average trending on the upside is favorable if it increases the price of the asset. That results in massive gains for investors, but it can also have a downside, which results in massive losses (i.e., rekt investors). Moving averages are used mainly for technical analysis in the stock market. …
