How To Keep A Positive Attitude At Work

Let’s face it, work sucks. For those of us who punch a clock each day, work can feel like a scene from Office Space.

If you have a career or day job that you truly enjoy, then kudos. For the rest of you, staying positive on a day-to-day basis is challenging, stressful, and exhausting. There’s simply not enough coffee in the break room to get you through.

The good news is it doesn’t have to be that way. I’m going to give you three simple ways to motivate yourself to stay positive and productive on a daily basis. Don’t let yourself feel like Peter Gibbons and that pesky memo.

Maintaining a positive attitude in anything you do starts from within. We cannot expect others to make us happy. Especially at work. So, how do you maintain a good, happy, and healthy attitude? There are three things I do that keep me going when I’m losing my positive outlook.

“A positive attitude causes a chain reaction of positive thoughts, events, and outcomes. It is a catalyst and is sparks extraordinary results.”

-Wade Boggs

Turn Your Work Space Into a Work Of Art

I admit I don’t have a ton of artwork in my office. But I have a number of photos to remind me of my family and good times. Use whatever works for you. Photography, art, inspirational quotes, a team calendar, whatever. As long as it’s appropriate for the workplace, decorate your space.

Foster Good Relationships With the Right Co-Workers

I’m not a fan of building relationships with everyone in your place of work. Yes, be professional and respectful of everyone, but not everyone is or will be worth your energy. Let’s admit there are colleagues who are toxic and detrimental to you and the organization. You will still need to work with them until their faults lead to their departure. Focus on developing professional relationships with those who are on the same page as you.

Know When to Walk Away

There are times we all encounter a professional disagreement. An idea that’s not liked by some, loved by others. The boss implements a change that….you get the idea. When it comes to your supervisor, well, you may need to just go with it. When it comes to colleagues, you need to learn to walk away at times. No business decision or project is worth workplace strife.

The same goes for those toxic coworkers. Do you have a narcissist on staff? A constant complainer? What about the colleague that whines about “too much work?” Walk away. It’s for your own good.

Positive Professionalism

The most successful entrepreneurs and employees all share the positivity trait. Maintaining a positive attitude at work is a choice. Why not choose to be yourself and be happy?
