2 Ways in 3 Minutes to Maximize Your Day Off

I heart routine.

Every morning my simple sleep app gently wakes me up and I’m gone. From brushing teeth to time with the Lord. A bike ride with the stillness and quiet of the morning to prepping breakfast before the welcomed sounds of giggles and yawns.

Cold showers to jump start the day to brewing delicious coffee that makes you want to close your eyes and breathe in deeply. Kisses and prayers as I hold my family close, and out the door with a Ted Talk waiting for me on the car ride to work.

I’ve found that while there is a vast amount of life that we can’t control, there is some that we actually can. Which is why I try to structure the most critical part of my day as a springboard for the rest of it.

So, if you’re a routine or productivity geek like me, here are some things I’m learning on how to switch gears when it comes to the weekend.

Don’t rush.

Even with my morning routine, I look like a pinball in our home. Bouncing from one area to the next. Which makes sense, I need to be at work at a certain time, and there are values and needs I want to meet for myself and the family, so there has to be some scheduling.

This isn’t the case with the weekend. So, don’t let it be.

Often times because I can spend most of the week rushing, it can naturally spill over into my day off. I’m bouncing around like it’s Monday morning, but it’s not. It’s been helpful to stop and say, “Don’t rush.”

It’s like I just forgot the work week wasn’t 6 days long.

A slower rhythm and pace is helpful and needed for those sacred days away from wherever you’re primary place of work is (even if it’s in the home).

My challenge for you and myself is to linger. Because you can.

Disrupt your routine to go slow. Put yourself in places where you must wait in order to go forward.

You’ll find simple blessings that you would otherwise miss.

What Can You Do Now That You Can’t During The Work Week?

I booted up my computer ready to browse the Interwebs. It’s my day off. I like to browse some of my favorite sites for news, sales… memes.

This was moments before putting on a show for my daughter to watch.

After a few moments I stopped and thought, “What can I do now that I can’t do during the work week?” And as I looked at my computer I thought “I can make space during lunch breaks and during the evening to explore the vastness of the World Wide Web.”

But as I looked at my daughter, I thought, “I can’t sit on the couch, watch a show with her, and play with her hair” (which she loves me to do). So, with a folding of the laptop, I was on the couch, lingering and loving.

Work hard. Rest hard.

Both of these are equally important, but most of the time I err on getting better grades in the former than the latter.

When it’s time to work, put your everything into it. But when it’s time to rest, do the exact same.
