Brexit, Jeremy Corbyn and a Shadow EU Ambassador.
The British EU referendum has ended with a vote to leave the EU as I correctly predicted on a previous article. In terms of Brexit and Labour, I believe the vote was that of no confidence in the “status quo’. That is, an austerity driven Conservative government. It was not a vote of ‘no confidence' in Jeremy Corbyn. Not many would know that even his brother, Piers Corbyn, a good friend of mine, voted for Brexit. Jeremy is an internationally focused man... not a ‘European' focused leader. He wants peace in the World and a limited World military role for Britain. Values I agree with. He sees the World, not just Europe. In an internationally tense climate (look at the States), he has values that transcend national politics.
I believe, as my father has said, that a ‘Shadow EU Ambassador’ needs be appointed by Labour to serve on the Cabinet. This would show the electorate and especially Labour voters that something is being done. It would also give Labour a figurehead to turn to within the Party on the issue of Brexit. It would also put the Conservatives on the back-foot.
Jeremy is undergoing huge discontent from within the former Shadow Cabinet. This is not the electorate. Another leadership election may just return him as leader again.
Labour need form a Special European Team headed by the Shadow EU Ambassador. This will strengthen the Party’s position with the electorate, grassroots, PLP/CLP and Cabinet. It would shift the emphasis that things can be done only by the Conservatives back to Labour.
