People who know me and my real estate business, TEAMSINISI Real Estate Group, know we give away hundreds of American Flags every year. Everyone of our clients receives one at closing. We also hand out hundreds of American Flag pins. Needless to say, we are passionate about the American Flag. Our mission is to have everyone in this great country flying our Flag on their property.
Here’s my thought: In our country, we are currently flying the Flag at half staff because of the recent tragedy in Brussels. While, like you, I am saddened by the debacle, I’m interested in your thoughts as to why the Flag was ordered lowered. There are actually, by Flag code, only two times our American Flag should be flown at half mast; on Memorial Day (until noon), and when ordered by POTUS. The pertinent section of the FlagCode says, “by order of the President, the flag shall be flown at half-staff upon the death of principal figures of the United States Government and the Governor of a State, territory, or possession, as a mark of respect to their memory (http://www.usflag.org/nff.half.staff.html). The later is reserved for the death of high ranking American officials, like Judge Scalia and Ms. Reagan, as of late.
I despise all the terrorist activities around the world as much as all you reading this. The code above was written to omit any trivialization of this memorial salute. However, if we had to fly our Flag at half staff every time there was a horrific happening, we would never fly it at the top of any pole. And who wants to be the person who decides what tragic event is despicable enough to garner a lowered Flag? We lose an American serviceman every day in this country.
What are your thoughts?
Yes, I capitalize Flag. It’s important to me and I treat our Flag with the utmost respect, especially for what it stands for. Many have died to protect it’s meaning.
God Bless You and God Bless America!
