They were largely a transitional design. Remember that most of these designs date from before modern computers. Modern aircraft like the F-22 have wing/fuselage designs which render swing-wings unnecessary — that and the fact that the idea for a long range interceptor rocketing off to stop bombers and cruise missiles at Mach 2+ has been rendered obsolete as well with the introduction of Aegis and other modern air-defense systems.
