The board of directors is made up of a president, treasurer, and secretary. There can also be a vice president and a member at large. They are all important to running homeowners associations and condominiums. We’re going to look at all of these roles and what they do.

An HOA President is the main point of contact between a community association manager and the rest of the community, as well as with vendors. They run HOA meetings and manage the agenda. They also mediate conflicts that might occur between residents and sign contracts and documents.

A Vice President fills in for the president when they’re not available, they are also the point of contact between committees and the board. So they may attend committee meetings so that the board is aware of what’s going on.

The treasurer is in charge of finances. So they prepare the annual budget and do the financial record keeping. They’re the intermediary between the account and the board, if applicable. They also facilitate reserve studies and audits regularly, and monitor payments, dues, assessments, and delinquencies. Finally, they also oversee the HOA’s insurance and taxes.

The secretary is the main recordkeeper and they organize the community association’s documents. They may act as a witness when the president signs documents, or sometimes co-sign them. They may also maintain and update the membership list, though sometimes the manager does this. The secretary also communicates with residents about events, rules, meetings, and safety information.

Finally, you have the member at large. They are a member who can fill in different roles as needed. They’re very useful in large community associations. Members at large should participate in board meetings, liaise between residents and board members and participate in specific projects. So if your community is organizing a large project, a member at large may be involved with it. Finally, they can facilitate the transition when new board members join.

All these board member roles are essential to running a successful community smoothly. To help communicate with residents, you can start your free trial of Neigbrs by Vinteum. This is an award-winning communication and management software designed for HOAs and Condos.
