4 Compelling Reasons (and Tips) to Try Different Hairstyles

Are your go-to hairstyles more often than not involve being tied in a bun or a knot? Do you find yourself buying new clothes more often just to get a new look, but end up never feeling satisfied? Are you always fumbling with your locks and feeling frustrated that it doesn’t look good anymore?

Newsflash: it may be time to get a new haircut. A new and different hairstyle is the quickest way to make a drastic change in your appearance, without the change being permanent at all. If you’re the type who doesn’t consider experimenting with hairstyles as something for you, here are a few compelling reasons why you should reconsider.

Discover what looks good on you

So you’re probably secure with the hairstyle you have now because not only does it suit you, but it’s low-maintenance too! While that’s all well and good, you could be missing out on other hairstyles that might actually look just as good or even better on you. Trying out different dos helps you learn which ones look nice on you and, let’s face it, which do not. Trust us, you’ll be able to tell by how many compliments you get!

Here’s a tip:

You know those virtual makeovers you can find online that seem silly? They’re actually not very silly at all. It’s a good, albeit funny, way to test various haircuts and colors without making any commitments! While it’s not always very accurate, at least you will already get an idea of how certain hairstyles could look on you.

Make it match

Nothing is permanent, and neither are your looks. But we don’t mean that in a bad way — you see yourself in the mirror every day so it might not be immediately noticeable to you, but it’s highly likely that your skin tone, cheeks, jawline, and other features do not look exactly like they did five years ago. You may have gotten more tan or pale, or perhaps you’ve lost or gained weight. Either way, it’s possible that the hair colors or styles that didn’t suit you then do now!

Here’s a tip:

The quickest way to find which hair colors will look good on you is to know your skin tone. You can find various ways to do this yourself, but save yourself the trouble and confusion by going to a department store cosmetic counter and asking them to assess your skin tone for you.

Transform Your Image

A new look can help accentuate any change in your personality, or if you’re going through a certain phase in your life. Whether you’re washing a man out of your hair or cutting him out, or transitioning from a young college girl to a young professional, your hair can say a lot about who you are and who you’re trying to become. In fact, you may notice that plenty of people get haircuts just before big events like a birthday, prom, wedding, or a new job! New you, new ‘do!

Here’s a tip:

Getting a haircut right before the event is tempting, but don’t fall for that trap! If you’re only getting a trip, one week before the event is fine. But if you’re getting a completely different haircut, get it done 3–4 weeks prior to the event so that you and your hair have ample time to adjust.

Hair Grows Out

As we mentioned before in an article about short hairstyles, the hair you have now will not be the only hair you’ll have forever. A 2005 study in the International Journal of Dermatology found that the average hair growth rate in a year was nearly 6 inches for Asian female participants, 4 inches for African female participants’, and a little over 5 inches for Caucasian female participants. The point is, no matter what your current haircut is, it’s going to grow out sooner or later anyway.

Here’s a tip:

If you ever get stuck with a bad haircut, you first need to think hard about why this happened. Was it the stylist, or did you simply pick a bad choice? Next, decide whether you want to go all out and try short haircuts (why not a pixie?), or if you’re willing to endure having to grow it out for the next couple of months.

You don’t need to be changing your haircut every couple of months. You especially don’t need to be dyeing it too often! Just try to change things up every so often, if only you don’t get stuck with have only one or two haircuts for the rest of your life.
