On Wine. A tragedy.

Optimistic, positive and democratic in scope as this article is – and I agree with most what’s said here – it carries an implicit message which I think useful to be exposed: by saying that “there is NO right wine” and that “everything” is dependent on individual taste, cultural (gastronomic) history and balance in taste receptors and olfactory sensitivity might erroneously imply that there is no bad wine on the market, which is plain and simple not true. There is A LOT of “wine” out there which in a better world would have no other destination than the sewer. I know that it fulfils a market demand, I know that there are people who wouldn’t know how to make the difference from that and a grand crù, but that doesn’t mean that some of the liquids presented on the market as “wine” are not just utter hogwash (in both the etymological and current sense of the word). And for the same reasons why fast and highly processed foods, trans-fat oils and high sugar content fizzy drinks should be exposed not only as an abomination to gastronomy but also as bordering on toxic, so should be bad wine.

Other than that, I’m fully on board with the idea that debunking the esoteric mystique of wine for the sake of enjoying the actual experience of drinking it is a jolly good one! As long as we remember that being a bit more knowledgeable about something (anything), never diminishes or takes away from the actual experience but only expands it by allowing us to understand more – including our own reactions – and thus experience more.
