Introduction

Education is one of the fundamental rights. Pakistan’s constitution guarantees that right. Article 25-A of the constitution states that “the state shall provide free and compulsory education to all children of the age of five to sixteen years in such a manner as may be determined by law”. However, in Pakistan, in recent years, it has become a luxury. The education system is fraught with structural issues that are hindering the human capital development, sustainable economic development. These structural issues include the lack of access to education, poor quality of education, outdated curriculum that breeds dogmatism, gender disparity, inadequate funding, poor pedagogical standards, outdated mode of examination, lack of proper infrastructure, neoliberal model that breeds inequality, and finally, a lack of trained teachers. These challenges have a severe impact on the country’s progress as they affect the quality of the workforce and hinder economic growth. This piece will discuss the major educational woes in Pakistan, their impact on society, and suggest some practical solutions to overcome them.
