Natural Summer Skincare Hacks

Have you ever been at the beach and taken a handful of sand and saltwater and used it as a body scrub? The saltwater mixed with sand creates a natural abrasive and detoxifying scrub found right beneath your feet. As you scrub off the dead skin from your hands and arms, you may wish you could enjoy this earthy skincare all summer long.

The good news is there are tons of natural skincare hacks that can bring that beachy skin glow right into your home this summer! The lovely truth about natural skin care is that it is better for your skin than products that are full of chemicals and fragrances and it is much less expensive!

First, We Exfoliate

The first step to naturally glowing skin is to remove all the excess dirt, oil, and dead skin from your face. In the summer there can be more buildup of these pore clogging factors than usual so it is crucial to gently scrub them away.

To get a refreshing and summer-scented DIY scrub, try combining

  • 1/2 fresh lemon
  • 1/2 cup of granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp of olive oil
  • 1 tbsp of organic honey

This lemon honey scrub has many natural benefits and the citrus scent will keep you spirits bright and sunny. The lemon will aid in evening out skin tone, tightening pores, and brightening your complexion. The sugar will act as the exfoliant here to remove the excess dead skin and make your skin smooth. Olive oil will heal soothe and heal skin while getting rid of any dry patches that may pop up in the summer. Lastly the honey will keep you hydrated and help fight off breakouts.

Get Your Mask On!

Masks are a popular beauty trend right now, and with good reason. They are fun, relaxing, and great for your skin. But whether you like to use a mask daily, or just once a week, they can be pricey. Why pay for expensive masks when you have all the ingredients you need for glowing skin right in your kitchen?

A simple recipe for a natural facemask is the honey avocado mask. The ingredients are:

  • ½ avocado
  • ¼ cup uncooked oatmeal
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice

Simply mash and combine all the ingredients into a bowl, apply to your face for about 20 minutes, then wash away with warm water and voila!

What are the benefits of these ingredients you ask? Avocado contains vitamin E and antioxidants that enrich the skin and make it smooth. Uncooked oatmeal acts as an exfoliant while you wash the mask off. The lemon and vinegar will brighten your skin tone while reducing any inflammation. And the honey will cleanse skin with its antibacterial properties and also brighten complexion.

This mask will keep skin looking radiant and may just be good enough to take a bite out of too!

Zap Those Zits, Naturally

Summer may bring a nice even skin tone when you get a bit of a tan, but it may also bring some troubling clogged pores. Acne creams can be harsh and dehydrating for the skin, but there are more natural approaches that will leave your skin clear and calm.

The next time you get a zit, approach it like the great sea. Sea salt is able to pull oil from the pore and has antibacterial properties that stop a zit in its tracks. All you need to do is combine 1 teaspoon of sea salt with water until it forms a paste. Apply this paste onto the affected area and let it dry for up to an hour. This will dry out the zit, but not the surrounding skin. Wash off the mixture after this and be free of the acne.

Bug Bites Be Gone

The lovely summer heat comes with the annoying summer bugs and their pesky bites. Bug bites can be itchy and uncomfortable and if itched too much, can become inflamed and infected. A great way to ease the pain if you’ve become the target of a bug feast is vinegar and milk- don’t worry not together.

First combine white or apple cider vinegar with an equal amount of water. Next, take cotton balls (one for each bite) and soak them in the mixture and then apply the cotton balls to the bites. The acidity in the vinegar will neutralize the sting from the bites, reducing some pain and preventing you from itching more.

Milk will help reduce swelling, prevent infection, and soothe irritated skin. To use milk, pour equal parts milk and water into a bowl and mix. Then take a thin cloth and soak it in the mixture and lay in over the affected area. Chilling the mixture can also increase the effectiveness of this trick.

Moisturizer From Mother Nature

After all your skin has been through this summer, we can’t forget to show it some moisturizing love. If you want to keep things really simple, you can use coconut oil as a one step, cure-all, natural moisturizer and be good to go. But if you want to spice things up and get a creamier, nicer smelling mix there are a couple other ingredients you can add.

All you will need is:

  • 1/2 cup shea butter
  • 2 tablespoons of organic coconut oil
  • 2 tablespoons of organic extra-virgin olive oil
  • (Optional) 20 drops of essential oils

Combine these ingredients to get a light, creamy, moisturizing blend that will hydrate your skin without any added toxins. The cool thing about this moisturizer is the optional essential oils. This step gives you the ability to make your moisturizer any scent you would like or to use oils that will benefit your specific skin type.

In all, natural skin care is always worth a shot. If nothing else, these simple recipes are fun to try and you know for certain that they are not harmful in any way to your skin.
