After successfully completing 4 weeks of “Building Resilience Through Dance Movement Therapy,” today was the final performance day where students of Virya Foundation showcased everything they had learned to their families. The purpose of this workshop was to build confidence and adaptability in children, especially in a time where we are living through a global pandemic.

Together, we practiced meditation and mindfulness to ground ourselves in the present moment, expressed our feelings through the Navarasas (9 Emotions), and learned storytelling dances about resilience. The girls felt empowered through their graceful dancing. We also had meaningful discussions on having a Fixed vs. Growth Mindset. …

Resilience is the ability to quickly recover from difficult situations while maintaining a positive mindset, and it is during unfortunate times like these we need this the most. This Covid-19 pandemic has challenged millions of individuals across the world — something no one could ever have predicted. Getting the virus, losing jobs, and being stuck at home all day have lowered spirits, and the lack of clarity for our future has unsettled minds.

Everyone responds to stress and adversity different but it is important to remember that by working on strengthening your resilience and maintaining a positive mindset, you will be in a better position to deal with the situation. Some ways to build resilience include meditation, yoga, journaling, talking to friends, or physical exercise. …

In total, we were able to raise $7,644 (Goal: $7,000) in 10 days of launching our relief platform! Protsahan India Foundation
“Protsahan thanks Riya Bhatia for her incredible effort to feed those most severely impacted by the Covid-19 lockdown, by loss of jobs and daily wages. Her empathy, sense of justice and courage is a testimony to all the young people out there, waiting to take action and make a difference. She used her creativity and innovation to raise funds for Protsahan’s cause. She raised 1,12,500 INR (~$1,500) so that hundreds of people get access to 2 square meals a day, who otherwise would’ve starved for nutrition and survival in these very difficult times. We wish Riya all the best.” …

On January 21, Riya Bhatia, founder of Virya Foundation, led a Dance Movement Therapy Workshop at the Fremont Senior Center. The workshop, started with a short meditation to center the room and bring participants minds to the present moment. She then explained the benefits of DMT and how she uses Kathak to help individuals improve physical and emotional wellbeing. She also performed a dance sequence to showcase Kathak Yoga, demonstrating the therapeutic elements of Kathak.

The seniors at the center were mesmerized by Bhatia’s elegant performance. Smiles and applause filled the room. Afterwards, many seniors donated to Virya Foundation which raised more than $250. This money was sent to Protsahan Indian Foundation’s Emergency Relief for daily wagers to deliver dry ration relief packs directly to families drastically affected by Covid-19. Each relief package contains 10 kg wheat flour, 10 kg rice, 1 liter cooking oil, salt, spices, sugar, soap, and detergent, and costs Rs. 1120 ($14.86) per pack. …
