The United Arab Emirates is a country located in the eastern part of the Arabian Peninsula. It is bordered by Saudi Arabia to the south and west, and by Oman to the northeast. The UAE has an area of 83,600 square kilometres and a population of 9.2 million people. The capital and largest city of the UAE is Abu Dhabi, which is also the country’s political and economic centre.
The UAE is a federation of seven emirates: Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, Sharjah, and Umm al-Quwain. Each emirate is governed by an absolute monarch; however, the affairs of the federation are managed by a Federal Supreme Council made up of the seven emirate rulers.
