I think you have put your finger on the other reason I hate most sitcoms. The first reason is that virtually every sitcom is based on the simple plot line:

Person A does / wants / has something that Person A thinks person B doesn’t want them to do / want / have. Person A tries to keep it a secret even though it is so obvious that there is no way that Person B is going to fail to figure it out. Person B really couldn’t care less about the original thing, but gets offended that Person A thought it was a big deal and tried to hide it. They eventually find a way to reconcile.

Basically, the same observation, over and over, that people are not good at communicating with each other. How many times do we have to get the same message? Talk to each other people, it is that simple.

So, adding toxic monogamy to that, you are right. No wonder relationships are so screwed up a lot of the time. Everyone is trying to live in a sitcom.
